World Autism on the Rise: April is Autism Awareness Month

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) refers to a group of complex neurodevelopment disorders characterized by repetitive and characteristic patterns of behavior and difficulties with social communication and interaction. The symptoms are present from early childhood and affect daily functioning.1

The term “spectrum” refers to the wide range of symptoms, skills, and levels of disability in functioning that can occur in people with ASD. Some children and adults with ASD are fully able to perform all activities of daily living while others require substantial support to perform basic activities. ASD occurs in every racial and ethnic group, and across all socioeconomic levels. However, boys are significantly more likely to develop ASD than girls.1

There is no cure for ASD. Therapies and behavioral interventions are designed to remedy specific symptoms and can substantially improve those symptoms. The ideal treatment plan coordinates therapies and interventions that meet the specific needs of the individual. Most health care professionals agree that the earlier the intervention, the better.

A new government survey of parents suggests that 1 in 45 children, ages 3 through 17, have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This is notably higher than the official government estimate of 1 in 68 American children with autism, by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).2

“The 1 in 45 estimate is not surprising and is likely a more accurate representation of autism prevalence in the United States,” comments epidemiologist Michael Rosanoff, Autism Speaks director for public health research. “This means that 2 percent of children in the U.S. are living with autism. The earlier they have access to care, services and treatment, the more likely they are to progress.”

Research suggests that autism develops from a combination of genetic and nongenetic, or environmental, influences.3 There is reason to be concerned about high levels of exposure to toxic chemicals in our environment. For this reason, Autism Speaks continues to support research to better understand the effects of chemical exposures during pregnancy, as there is preliminary evidence that pesticides may increase the risk of autism. Although researchers cannot confirm that avoiding exposure to pesticides or any specific chemical can reduce autism risk in a child or future child, they do say that exposure to toxic chemicals during pregnancy or early infancy poses a general threat to future health. High lead exposure has been shown to lower IQ scores. Certain endocrine disrupting chemicals have been linked to birth defects. So it’s reasonable for parents to take reasonable steps to avoid these exposures.4

Scientists also have been reporting links between the composition of bacteria in the gut and autistic behavior. A review of more than 150 papers on ASD and gut bacteria found that since the 1960s, studies show that restoring a healthy balance in gut bacteria can treat ASD symptoms.5

Dr Qinrui Li of Peking University, China says, “The environmental factors include the overuse of antibiotics in babies, maternal obesity and diabetes during pregnancy, how a baby is delivered and how long it is breastfed. All of these can affect the balance of bacteria in an infant’s gut, so are risk factors for ASD. Efforts to restore the gut microbiota to that of a healthy person has been shown to be really effective. Our review looked at taking probiotics, prebiotics, changing the diet – for example, to gluten- and casein-free diets, and fecal matter transplants. All had a positive impact on symptoms such as increased sociability, a reduction in repetitive behaviour, and improved social communication: all hugely beneficial to the life of an ASD sufferer.5

A Nikken Wellness Home can help create a healthy environment with clean water, organic nutritional supplements and effective Sleep Products. Here are just a few success stories:

Carla P. says, “My son James was diagnosed with autism before he turned three. Over the years, we made progress, but James still had difficulty sleeping and this child would get up and roam all over the house, turn on lights, turn on TVs with loud volume, and go into his brothers’ rooms and wake them up. It disrupted the entire household. I decided to try a Kenko Mattress Topper on his bed.  It still amazes me. He continues to sleep every night, and he is now making progress through the day because of this good sleep he is getting.

“He has had other positive effects from Nikken products, and if I didn’t experience this myself, I would have never believed it.  The best part was how non-invasive all of these products are. Autism is like a puzzle, and you are always seeking the right pieces that fit.  Well, I definitely found some of the biggest pieces to help my son.  It didn’t cure him, but his quality of life is so much better. And isn’t that ultimately what we all desire?”*

Lorri from Alberta, Canada says, “After two weeks of sleeping on the Kenko Sleep System, Brody was sleeping well and this good sleep has helped him function better during the day.  Brody wears the magnetic insoles and necklace during the day to help him feel more relaxed and calmer.  After using all of these magnets, his behavior has also improved. Now, a year later, I can’t believe it! Wow oh wow, it’s wonderful stuff! Everyone notices such a huge difference in him.”*

Beth says, “My cousin’s adopted son is a five-year-old who is autistic. He has always been a high energy, non-speaking autistic child. Since the day he was put on the large Kenko PetPad and the insoles in his shoes, he has calmed down considerably. When my cousin unwrapped the PetPad, he walked up to it and wrapped his arms around it. It seemed to immediately ‘soothe’ him and help him feel more relaxed and calm. He now goes to sleep at regular hours, remains calm throughout the day and is able to function better as a result of the Nikken products. Nothing else in his life has changed, only the addition of Nikken products.”*

Gretchen T. says, “I worked with a woman with a 21-year-old autistic son. She used the Kenko Sleep System for him because he had never been able to sleep an entire night in his life. He would wake up several times. He would also pull his covers over his face, which made his mother very nervous. From the first night on the system, he slept all night long and never pulled the comforter over his face, and was more relaxed. So she then tried the PiMag water with him. He always hated drinking water and would only take a few sips. The first glass of PiMag water he was given, he drank right down and even asked for another one. Was she ever delighted!”*

Do you know someone with a child who is on the spectrum and might benefit from a Nikken Wellness Home? You could be the one who helps improve lives with Active Wellness!

In It to Win It

Kaizen is a Japanese term meaning “continuous improvement through positive change.” Nikken Independent Consultants who qualify for Team Kaizen are generously rewarded for one year or more, depending on their sales performance. Recipients of this award exemplify Kaizen and have the opportunity to experience VIP treatment and an annual all-paid luxury trip. In 2018, Team Kaizen is going to Japan in May, so anyone who wants to be rewarded with the 2019 trip to Italy should be working to qualify right now!

How does anyone get and stay motivated to enroll new Consultants consistently and accumulate more than 3,000 points in sales month after month in order to qualify? Or to do 50,000 points in annual PGPV (Personal Group Point Volume), all of which focus on sponsorship and retail sales?

As the saying goes, “There are different strokes for different folks.” In network marketing you can be inspired by the accomplishments of others, i.e,. “I want to do that, too.” It also is a business where you need to consciously motivate yourself to push on, i.e., “I can do it!” Both apply to Nikken entrepreneurs as well as the desire to live with Active Wellness.

Here’s a story from Royal Ambassador Valerie Johnson about motivation. She is a triathlete who reads a lot. In fact, virtually every successful Nikken Consultant is an avid reader of motivational books. Valerie’s recent find is by the renowned Olympic champion, ice skater Scott Hamilton, author of Finish First: Winning Changes Everything. She says that Scott Hamilton writes of having done 31,200 practices before turning pro. During each of those practice sessions, he fell an average of four times, which equates to 41,600 falls.

Valerie asks, “Why would someone keep falling and falling again, and keep on?” The answer is “because he loves to skate, and he has a burning desire to win!” Valerie understands this desire to win and explains how she started doing triathlons and compares it to how she started doing Nikken as a business.

Describing her first triathlon, Valerie says, “My objective was to just finish the race. I figured if I could just finish, I would be a winner. As I was coming in toward the end, I found myself behind a younger lady who appeared quite fit. She had on cute race shorts with a spanky skirt. Intimidated, I ran behind her for quite a while, and then it came to me, ‘Why are you following her? You can go faster than this!’ So I put the pedal to the metal, lengthened my stride and whooshed right past her. When I crossed the finish line, I was surprised and tremendously thrilled to find that I was in third place for my age division! I was hooked; not just on triathlons, but on winning! When I decided to be in it to win it, my whole attitude and focus changed. There’s a huge difference between being in it to participate and being in it to win.”

In Scott Hamilton’s book, he says, “What if winning was so much less about having the right qualities and qualifications, and more about simply having the hunger to win? What if it was less about hard work and sacrifice and more about commitment and repetition? Would the concept of winning become easier for you if you believed it was simply about getting on the right path and doing the same thing over and over again? So often when we look at success, we see the incredible virtuoso musicians or athletes. What we don’t see if the long road they walked to get there. We don’t see the time they put in while we weren’t watching.”

Valerie sees what Scott writes about in herself. She says, “I started Nikken with much the same attitude that I started doing triathlons. I was participating but not really putting my all into it. What would happen if I was actually in it to win it? I would set my goals firmly, I would find a coach, I would practice, I would get up each time I fall and try again, I would do those seemingly small things that really do make the difference such as read good-for-me-books, listen to character-building podcasts and recordings, watch educational videos about our business and products, meet new people, make friends, invite them to hear what Nikken has to offer. I would up my game! I would meet more people, make more friends, invite more people—and never give up!

“In it to win it,” says Valerie Johnson. No wonder she is part of one of the most successful distributorships in the history of Nikken! What about you?

Are You Going Gold?

Let’s be honest. Everyone likes receiving money; however, not everyone wants to earn it. With Nikken, the income opportunity gives you a way to make money and have fun while you’re doing it. You see, success as a Nikken entrepreneur depends on developing relationships and building friendships. And let’s stay with honesty here—everyone needs friends, so what could be better than having friends who partner in sharing Active Wellness?

Nikken vice president of sales Jeff Isom explains, “To reach the rank of Gold, you need a minimum of 15,000 QOPV (qualified organization point volume) the month you rank advance. To accomplish that, you need some help. This means you need at least three to six people who are building a business and not just consuming the products. These three to six team leaders should be retailing products and sponsoring Consultants into Nikken.”

Something to remember with clarity is that Consultants are entrepreneurs and consumers while customers are only consumers. Customers sometimes become Consultants when they understand that the very products they love consuming can lead to making money. So, never be pushy but always be ready to serve.

With that said, let’s take the original business-building formula of 500 points a month and raise the stakes. Instead of just selling and consuming 500 points a month, what if your three entrepreneurs committed to being Nikken team leaders and doubled their points? That means each team leader would sell and consume 1000 points a month and sponsor three entrepreneurs who are committed to doing the same. At that rate, your three personally sponsored business builders who each have their three personally sponsored Consultants (for a total of 13 business builders in your group including yourself) jointly have built an organizational volume of 13,000 points. That leaves you needing only 2,000 more points to go Gold. If you had four entrepreneurs in your personal group practicing this business model, you would have way surpassed the 15,000 points needed.

In real life, you may have an entrepreneur who chooses to work towards Team Kaizen by creating at least 3,000 QPGPV a month and others with 500, 600 or 700 points a month. However their numbers add up, you need to accumulate 15,000 points in one month to go Gold and maintain that monthly volume level to continue getting paid at Gold. As Royal Ambassador Dave Johnson says, “The person who does the most good for the greatest number of people, is the most successful.”

So what can you do right now in your quest to go Gold?

  • Set yourself apart from others who are selling products. Provide exceptional service in the form of emotional support and real knowledge. You are building a long-term relationship/friendship. Diamond Vance Rogers puts it succinctly when he says, “As Consultants, we can give our customers the absolute best thing that they’re looking for. We simply need to find out what that is and allow them to go shopping on their customer page.”
  • Have pride in representing Nikken products and be knowledgeable about them. It’s ideal if you have personal testimonials. (Make sure you don’t make any medical claims.) When new people sign up, they are signing up because of their belief in you.
  • Identify your target market and realize that it is not necessarily made up of family and friends. It’s made up of people who want to earn money and have fun doing it. Find people who want to build and earn over the long term.
  • Treat your Nikken business as your way to make a living, not a hobby. That means consistently networking and following up. There is no other type of business that allows you to combine as much pleasure with work.
  • Never quit. Start with your monthly 500 qualified personal point volume but don’t let that be your limit—the sky is the limit!

What’s in Your Water?

There are three different types of drinking water: tap water, filtered water and bottled water. In many countries, tap water is not potable, so it has to be boiled first. Even in North America, not all tap water is potable—for example, the Flint, Michigan water crisis1 and the First Nations indigenous water crisis in Canada2 are still not fully resolved.

Water is supposedly tasteless, but everyone knows tap water can taste nasty. The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) conducted a study in 2003 that showed public water supplies in 19 of America’s largest cities delivered drinking water that contained contaminant levels exceeding EPA limits, including rocket fuel, arsenic, lead, fecal waste and chemical byproducts.3

According to the NRDC, approximately 25% of bottled water is nothing more than tap water. The best way to find out is to read the label and see whether it tells you how the water is filtered. If it doesn’t say, chances are it’s straight from the tap.

The other problem with bottled water is the bottle itself. Many plastic bottles are created with a chemical called bisphenol A, otherwise known as BPA. It’s linked to numerous health issues, including infertility, obesity, diabetes, insomnia, arthritis, heart disease and more.4 And, the plastic bottles add to the trash that goes into landfills and the oceans, adding to environmental degradation.

Filtered water is clearly the best option for drinking. According to the Food and Water Watch Organization, even expensive water filters are more cost effective than bottled water, especially when evaluating costs over a 5, 10 and 20-year period.5

Water filters offer the last line of defense between the body and the more than 2,100 known toxins that may be present in drinking water.6 Experts recommend looking for a water filter that satisfies the standards of NSF International, a nonprofit organization that conducts safety testing for food and water industries. Look specifically for what type of contaminants the water filter will remove.

The PiMag Waterfall® complies with NSF standards as follows:

  • NSF Standard 42—Reduction of chlorine, chloramine, taste and odor*
  • NSF Standard 53—Reduction of mercury, volatile organic chemicals (VOCs)*
  • NSF Standard 372—Lead compliance

*Reverse Osmosis systems do not remove VOCs, chlorine or chloramine.8

The PiMag Waterfall® is an advanced filtration system that produces water with added minerals (unlike expensive Reverse Osmosis systems that leach out beneficial minerals) in a pH range of 8.5-9.5. Regular tap water typically has a pH range of 6.5-8.5, with 7 considered “basic” and below 7 as acidic.7

Because the PiMag Waterfall works without electricity or plumbing, it can be used in any location. As with all PiMag products, the Waterfall is made with recyclable and biodegradable materials, including a polymer that does not leach chemicals into water.

Keep it Simple: Make a Decision and Take Action

The dictionary defines “resolution” as “a firm decision to do or not to do something” as well as “the action of solving a problem, dispute or contentious matter.” This might be the time of year when some of us secretly feel disappointment for the goals we did not accomplish this year. Apparently 80% of new year resolutions fail by February!1

To prevent this from happening cyclically, we have to change our mindset and embrace discipline in a Zen kind of way. In other words, keep an open mind, get rid of biases and preconceived notions, set our goals for the new year, make the commitment, create an action plan, and then act on it. If we lapse, we need to forgive ourselves and get right back on that proverbial horse.

To make the coming year your best business year yet, you need to know why you’re in business with Nikken and what you’re willing to commit to in terms of sponsoring, retailing and mentoring. What were you focused on in 2017? Was it effective? What will you focus on in 2018?

Here are some suggestions to help you make 2018 your best Nikken year yet:

  • Choose to believe in yourself and trust the company. Trust that you can do it and trust that Nikken is behind you all the way.
  • Plan your day the night before. Make your to-do list and have it prioritized.
  • Set aside a time every day to look over and manage your business on your myNikken Virtual Office. You need to know who your potential stars are and mentor them closely. You also need to encourage the forgetful ones to go on Autoship so they will never run out of product. Remember that there is Retail Autoship as well as Consultant Autoship.
  • Incorporate the Everyday Weight Management Pack into your Active Wellness lifestyle. The Pack is not just about being at the right weight. It’s about good nutrition and a digestive tract that works efficiently. You are a walking advertisement, so stay physically and mentally fit.
  • Resolve to be a role model and have a 30 to 60 second testimonial ready about how you’ve benefited from Nikken physically, mentally and financially. How can you sell anyone on product or business-building benefits if you don’t practice what you preach?
  • Make sure you’re personally retailing at least 500 points monthly. (For example, retail just one Water Pack and you’re there, or an Everyday Weight Management Pack and you’re almost there.)
  • Make it a point to follow up with your retail customers.
  • Sponsor at least three people who are each committed to retailing 500 points a month. Show them how to earn by sponsoring their own three team members.
  • A Wellness Home begins with you and what you put into your body. Build your own Wellness Home with Nikken products from the Nutrition, Water and Sleep categories. Teach your team members and new customers to do the same.

An old network marketing saying is “overanalysis is paralysis.” We tend to complicate work and life with too many ifs, ands or buts. Instead, we need to think things through, make solid decisions and follow through. There will always be good days and bad days, but the key is to stick to the plan. Speaking the right lingo is not enough, as actions make businesses grow. By taking the right actions consistently, you’ll be congratulating yourself for a year of achievement when next December comes rolling around!

Looking Toward the Perfect Twelfth Month of 2017

Since the month of December starts tomorrow, let’s explore the significance of the number 12. Not only is 12 the symbol of cosmic order, but it is also the number that represents space and time. Examples are the 12 months in a year, and time measured in two groups of 12 hours as delineated by a.m. and p.m.

From ancient times, 12 is considered the number of perfection as it is the result of four multiplied by three. Four represents the number of elements as well as the four corners of the earth and the four cardinal points. Three is known as the divine number that represents the past, present and future; birth, life and death; beginning, middle and end. 4 x 3 = 12, the perfect number.

Astrology and mythology also reflect the significance of the number 12. Both eastern and western zodiacs revolve around 12. There are 12 signs in the western zodiac, and 12 animals in the eastern zodiac. Each of the 12 animals completes a 12-year cycle known as one “wheel” before occurring again.

In the Bible, Jesus had 12 apostles. And, Jacob had 12 sons who are the ancestors of the 12 Tribes of Israel. In Islam, Ishmael the Patriarch had 12 sons who became the tribal chiefs from Assyria to Egypt.

In Greek mythology, the 12 Olympians were the 12 principle gods that resided on Mount Olympus. In addition, Heracles (the son of Zeus and his human mother) was a great hero who was set to accomplish 12 seemingly impossible tasks that he managed to complete with wit and strength. These are known as the 12 Labors of Heracles.

In numerology, 12 represents the completed cycle of experience and the learned possibility of regeneration toward a higher consciousness. December is considered the month to let go of the old and look ahead to the new. It’s the time of year to deal with negative issues and be done with them, moving on to what is better. It’s a month to see your efforts begin to bear fruit. It’s the time of year to expect positive surprises in business, friends and love as a result of social interactions. And, it’s the perfect time to plant seeds in the hearts and minds of those around you.

Give Thanks, Take Care of the Gut and Share the Love

However we celebrate Thanksgiving, there’s generally an overflow of great home-made food, some of which is served specifically at this time of year. So it’s special and we want to eat as much of it as possible, right? And just like any other meal that offers a bounty of favorite delights, it can derail our best efforts at eating healthy. As most diet gurus profess that an occasional “cheat” day is actually okay. Furthermore, we tend to rationalize that Thanksgiving feasting is a given. Some of us can handle it and some of us, not so much. The difference? Some of us have been pursuing Active Wellness consistently and have more efficient digestive systems.

According to the American Gastroenterological Association Institute, good digestive health describes a digestive system that has appropriate nutrient absorption, intestinal motility, immune function, and a balanced microbiota (the community of microorganisms that live in the gut).1 Digestive health can also impact quality of life, sleep, productivity, exercise or socializing with friends. Scientists now are placing the emphasis on healthy digestive function as the core of good health.

Dr. John Deaton, vice president of science and technology at Deerland Enzymes & Probiotics, says, “The role of digestive enzymes is to break down food-derived fats, carbohydrates and proteins into smaller substances that our bodies can use. Although the body produces its own digestive enzymes, it may not be enough to completely break down cooked or processed foods. The ability to breakdown food into its basic and useful components is of critical concern for consumers interested in functional nutrition for growth, development and supporting healthy aging. Enzyme supplements continue to gain recognition among consumers for their role in digestive health and bioavailability of nutrients from foods.”2

Studies show that there are four enzymes critical to the digestive process. Specific digestive enzymes act on different types of macronutrients: fats, proteins, carbohydrates and fiber. Many digestive products on the market contain only one or two of these notable enzymes and do not provide optimal digestive support. Kenzen® Digestion Complex 4-20 contains all four of these important enzymes, making it a superior formulation for digestion, absorption and weight management.*  Featuring natural ingredients including amino acids, proteins, vegetable fiber- and cellulose-based enzymes, Kenzen® Digestion Complex 4-20 contains vegetable-derived ingredients that safely and gently assist the body’s digestive system.

This Thanksgiving, let’s be grateful for our abundance, indulge but not to excess and edify the Healthy Society Pillar by sharing the bounty of health and opportunity.

Why Kenzen® Lactoferrin 2.0™

There’s a new lactoferrin in the Nikken neighborhood and we’re super excited about it. Kenzen® Lactoferrin 2.0 addresses the body’s need for iron: iron deficiency can result in anemia, fatigue and poor circulation, as well as many other physical discomforts. Women are most vulnerable to iron deficiency, and people who are very active may also suffer from iron depletion. Kenzen® Lactoferrin 2.0 is a great solution.

Lactoferrin is a protein whose main biological function is to bind and transport iron, an essential mineral that helps hemoglobin carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. No matter how much iron is in your body, if it can’t be retained and utilized, you could end up deficient. For example, you may eat lots of green, leafy vegetables,and/or lean red meat, which are natural sources of iron. But your doctor runs a blood test and announces that you’re anemic. How can this happen? Just because you eat iron-rich foods does not mean your body can absorb or process it.

Lactoferrin 2.0 addresses this dilemma by providing a delivery system to allow the body to better utilize and balance the iron in the body.* Studies show that because Lactoferrin 2.0 is naturally iron-binding, it has a positive effect on iron absorption, which in turn increases blood iron levels.

In addition, Lactoferrin 2.0 is gentle on the digestive system, therefore supporting the gastrointestinal tract and all its functions. Rather than adding elemental iron —the kind you find in virtually every iron supplement on the market—which has been shown to cause intestinal inflammation1, lactoferrin helps the body absorb what is already there—and importantly, without upsetting the stomach. And, Lactoferrin 2.0 has been shown in clinical research to be more bioavailable, allowing for more efficient absorption of iron, compared to other iron sources.2

Just take a look at the graph:

With Lactoferrin 2.0 you get 200 mg of lactoferrin in each capsule—more than three times as much for the same cost as before. More lactose-free, gluten-free, non-GMO lactoferrin, an efficient delivery system and four organic antioxidant, anti-inflammatory ingredients (see Brain-Gut Connection) equals increased access to Active Wellness and more importantly, your improved health.
